KOS ISLAND
About the island

Kos island is the third biggest in size of Dodecanese. This beautiful island is characterized by alteration of sceneries. It has an oblong shape and two mountains, Dikeo and Simbatro at the south coast.
Kos is also known as the island of Hypocrites, since the father of medicine was born in this magnificent island.
The capital, Kos, is situated at the northeastern part of the island in a beautiful location.
The ancient city walls are still saved around the harbor, which was built between 1450 and 1478, during the domination of the Saint John's Knights.

The excavations brought into light remains of the ancient town, such as the Ancient Market, the Gymnasium, the Roman Baths, a Roman mansion, part of the walls, the bases of a temple dedicated to Venus and another, probably dedicated to Hercules.

Kos, is a modern town, which offers guests all comforts and services. It has contemporary constructions, hotels and lanes with palm trees.

In a beautiful location, 4 km westwards of the town, is the Asklippiio, or the Conservatoire of Asklipios. The building leans against four berms, which are jointed through a marble staircase. The view from the highest point is magnificent.

The most significant site is the doric style temple of Asklipios, built in the 2nd BC. You can also visit the Colonnade and the Altar (3rd BC), which is decorated with statues dedicated to Praxiteles.

During your stay in Kos it is worth visiting some of the island's villages. Asfendiou is built at the banks of mountain Dikeos, 14km from the town of Kos. In Pyli you will see the remains of the Byzantine castle and the church of Ypapantis at the village's central square. Thermes villages have therapeutic springs, while Kardamena is a seaside resort at the eastern part of the island. Don't miss visiting, Tigaki, Marmari and Mastihari, the second harbor of Kos. Kefalos village at the southwestern part of the island has a beautiful beach. In Palatia you will see the remains of the ancient town Astipalea.

Kos island has many beaches, most of which are organized. If you want to avoid crowds, there are some isolated ones where you can enjoy your swim.
